Who we think is the best Australian actresses currently acting

As we’ve already published the best British and American actresses, it’s only fair we do the same for the Aussies. We have to admit, the best Australian actresses were limited in numbers. However, if you consider the population difference between Australia and America (rather significant), they’ve not done too badly at all.

When selecting the best Australian actresses, we considered several factors including the number of films made, awards and nominations, versatility and a natural ability to portray a realistic character.

1. Nicole Kidman

Taking centre stage is Nicole Kidman who is now 51. She’s a highly capable and versatile Australian actress, having starred in several Hollywood movies.

Kidman has had a hugely successful acting career and has no issue with taking on leading roles. She’s best known for movies To Die For, The Others and Eyes Wide Shut and she’s recently been cast in DCs Aquaman.

She has a natural ability to perform across a wide range of genres, including thrillers, fantasy, drama and even musical. This makes her one of the most desirable Australian female actresses going.

Since Kidman has been acting, she starred in 64 movies for which she has received 102 awards out of 302 nominations.

Her major awards include one Academy Award for best actress in 2003 movie The Hours. She’s also won a number of Golden Globes, two Emmy’s and a British Academy Film Award.

Kidman was the first Australian actress ever to receive an Academy Award for best actress.

2. Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett was born in Ivanhoe and is now 49. She is an exceptional Australian actress, not only recognised in Hollywood but also across the globe.

She is best known for starring in movies Lord of the Rings, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Robin Hood and her most recent – Ocean’s 8. Blanchett is also very easy on the eye and is always a pleasure to watch. All in all, she’s one of the best Australian actresses there is.

Since Blanchett has been acting, she’s starred in 53 movies for which she has received 148 awards out of 338 nominations.

Her major awards include two Academy Awards (one for best actresses for 2014 movie Blue Jasmine and the other for best supporting actress for her role in The Aviator). Her others include several Golden Globes and two BAFTAs.

3. Rose Byrne

Next on out list of the best Australian actresses is Rose Byrne, now 39. Born in New South Wales, Byrne is known to excel in any acting role that’s thrown her way.

She can be found in hit comedy films such as Neighbors, Bridesmaids and Get Him To The Greek. We’ve also seen her in horrors such as Insidious and Insidious: Chapter 2, proving her ability as a versatile actress.

Since Byrne has been in acting, she’s starred in over 40 movies for which she has received 13 awards out of 35 nominations.

Although she hasn’t won any major awards, she’s still managed to bag herself three AACTA awards and a Glamour Award for best comedy actress. She also won an MTV award twice for best jaw dropping moment for her roles in Neighbors and Bridesmaids.

4. Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie was born in Queensland and, at 28, is the youngest Australian actress on our list. Robbie is well known for her outrageous sex appeal which can be evidenced by her scooping first place on our list of the top 10 for sexiest actresses.

But don’t let that pretty face fool you. She is one of the most exceptional young actresses in Australia and has already started in several massive box office hits.

Robbie can be found in movies such as The Wolf of Wall Street, Suicide Squad, Focus and her most recent film Mary Queen of Scots.

Acting always comes easy for Robbie – she’s a natural performer and never appears scripted. As a bonus, on and off screen – she’s a hottie.

Since Robbie has been acting, she’s starred in 21 films for which she has received 14 awards out of 63 nominations.

She was nominated for an Academy Award for best actress for her role in 2017 film I, Tonya. She also won one Empire Award and several Critics Choice Awards.

5. Mia Wasikowska

Mia Wasikowska is now 29 and was born in the Australian Capital Territory.

Even at a relatively young age, she has already proven herself to be a very capable actress, starring in a number of large box office hits including alongside Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. She can also be found in Crimson Peak, Jane Eyre and Lawless.

Wasikowska has been so successful, she’s landed herself a spot on our list of the richest actors in hollywood. She’s one of the best Australian actresses going and is well deserving of her spot on our list.

Since Wasikowska has been in acting, she starred in 23 movies for which she has received five awards out of 30 nominations. Her awards include a Hollywood Film Award and a Gold Derby Award.

Although she hasn’t won any major awards, this is understandable considering her young age.

6. Melissa George

Melissa George is widely known as one of the best Australian actresses there is. Many aren’t aware that she started her acting career in Australian soap Home and Away.

She is now 42, born in Western Australia and can mainly be found in thrillers and horrors. We think she is perfect for these roles, what with her ability to portray gripping characters so well.

Whatever she’s filming, George always proves herself. Her movies include The Amityville Horror, 30 Days of Night, Triangle and Dark City.

Since George has been in acting, she’s starred in 19 movies for which she has received 4 awards out of 9 nominations (including one nomination for a Golden Globe for best supporting actress (In Treatment)). Her other awards include one Saturn Award and two Logie Awards.

7. Abbie Cornish

Abbie Cornish is an Australian actress who is now 36. Born in Lochinvar, she’s featured in a fair few Hollywood movies including Limitless, RoboCop, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and her most recent film Geostorm.

Cornish has no issue playing a variety of different personalities and characters and always gives a good performance in front of the camera.

Since Cornish has been in acting, she started in 21 movies for which she has received 14 nominations.

Although Cornish has to get to receive any major awards, she has plenty of time in which to earn some. Her current awards include one New York City International Film Festival Award for best supporting actress for her role in The Girl Who Invented Kissing.  

8. Toni Collette

Toni Collette was born in New South Wales, Australia. She’s 46 years of age and has starred in several movies such as The Sixth Sense, Muriels, About A Boy and her most recent film – Hereditary.

Collette first arrived on our screens in the 90s and has proven herself as an outstanding actress since. She confidently turned down the title role in Bridget Jones’s Diary due to the fact that she wanted to commit to performing her role, on stage in Broadway.

Since Collette has been in acting, she starred in 56 movies for which she has received 42 awards out of 71 nominations.

Her major achievements include one Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her role in The Sixth Sense. She also won one Golden Globe and one Blockbuster Entertainment Award.

9. Rachel Griffiths

Rachel Griffiths, now 50, was born in Melbourne, Australia. She is well known in the industry as a woman who is capable of playing strong, dramatic, female roles with uber confidence and ease.

A true professional, Griffiths is passionate about her work and has a long standing career, going from success to success since she first landed on our screens in the early 90s.

She’s best known for starring Muriel’s Wedding, Hacksaw Ridge, Blow and Saving Mr. Banks.  

Since Griffiths has been in acting, she has starred in 23 movies for which she has received 15 Awards out of 36 nominations.

Her major achievements include one Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress for her role in the 1998 movie Hilary and Jackie. She’s also won at the Golden Globes and has received three Australian Film Institute Awards.

10. Emily Browning

Emily Browning, aged 30, is another great actress from Melbourne, Australia.

She started acting early on in her life, starring in movies such as Ghost Ship and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. As she’s gotten older, she’s gone on to act in several hit movies such as Pompeii and Legend.

We feel Browning is often overlooked as a successful, female actress but were not sure why. Her moving and emotional performance in Legend was incredible. And she’s a stunner.

Since Browning has been in acting, she’s starred in 18 movies for which she has received 5 awards out of 9 nominations.

Browning is yet to receive any major awards but did receive an Australian Film Critic Association Award for best actress for her role in Sleeping Beauty. She’s also won two Australian Film Institute Awards.
